GM, Ford to adopt Tesla charging network and North America Charging Standard (NACS)

On Jun 8, 2023, GM CEO Marry Barra in a 10 minute Twitter Spaces chat with Elon Musk announced GM will join Ford to adopt Tesla’s charging network and to build GM cars using Tesla’ open North American Charging Standard (NACS) starting in 2025. This a win win for GM, Tesla and customers. GM customers will now have access to additional 12,000 Tesla Superchargers and doubles GM’s access to charging stations. Ford on May 25, 2023 announced they would use Tesla ‘s NACS plug going forward starting with 2025 vehicles. Ford and GM’s existing EVs using CCS (Combined Charging System) plugs can access Tesla Superchargers via an adapter in starting in 2024. Ford and GM EV owners can now use EV as their only vehicle now that charging is readily available and they can find charging anywhere for long trips. Tesla wins by having greater utilization of the Superchargers and have an extra source of revenue by providing charging service. This in similar to Amazon outsourcing their compute resources and creating AWS and allow others to use their cloud resources.
