In Episode 389 of the Ride the Lightning podcast, host Ryan McCaffrey interviews Franz von Holzhausen, Chief Designer at Tesla. They talked about lots of topics related to Tesla, Cybertruck, color options, Model 3, Safety, Roadster and more. They mentioned the Cybertruck and all of Tesla cars are currently in an exhibit at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles from now until October 22, 2023. Franz confirms that the Cybertruck is mostly done but the design team will continue to work with engineering and production team. Franz mentioned that Cybertruck will definitely feature the stainless steel exterior. It is chosen because of its toughness and a good fit for the intent of the vehicle. The Cybertruck being so unique, Franz thinks it probably will not need an emblem. On safety Franz pointed out that Tesla cars are among the safest on the road and Tesla cars are always looking out for their owner and family. About the decision to add round steering wheel option on the Tesla Model S, Franz admits that some customers prefer that over the Yoke and that he wants customers to love their car and if there’s something that a roadblock, he’s happy to make the change to make it happen. About the Model 3, Franz believes the car is very well designed and there isn’t a lot he wants to change. In Europe, Model Y is available in Silver and Midnight Red. Franz like to add more color options in US. On the Roadster, Franz hints that it has gotten better since the prototype announcement and asks listeners to imagine what’s possible now that the Model S Plaid can achieve the Roadster level acceleration. About what he does each day, Franz says he works on all the cars all the time.
